Uniforms - "Aye" or "Nay" ?

"Some people believe that requiring students in school settings to conform to a dress code improves student behavior, reduces differences among socioeconomic levels, and enhances students' self-confidence. Others say that policies stipulating dress codes or requiring school uniforms infringe upon students' First Amendment rights, stifle individuality, and impose unnecessary means of control."

This was a quote taken from a website on Educational Management which was discussing about uniforms implemented in schools that I was reading from. I do really wonder why are these people even bringing up the issue about school uniforms. I mean, if the government implemented the policy that all students attending public schools must wear uniforms, then what is the big deal?

When I read this part..."infringe upon students' First Amendment rights, stifle individuality, and impose unnecessary means of control", I instantly thought of one thing. How on Earth can your uniform stifle your individuality?!! If you have style, you HAVE style. If you stand out, you WILL stand out - be it in jeans and t-shirt or the ever controversial school uniform. Granted, if you are dressed in branded clothes and have cool accessories (or even weird ones) - you will definitely attract attention. When the quote of "stifling individuality" comes up, I think its just that those who are fashion freaks a.k.a Mr/Ms Vain Pot's way of saying that "I want to stand out and attract as much attention as I can get. So just get off my case!" Thus, I would like to say it again - if you're cool, you're COOL. Accept the fact if you're not, and stop whining, giving lame excuses and blaming anything or anyone else. Grow up, mature and show TRUE INDIVIDUALITY!

And the part of "imposing unnecessary means of control", I really think its no issue at all! How is it that wearing school uniform reflects the school's control over an individual? Try remembering the times when you were (or are still) in school which required you to wear uniform. Did it even managed to control you in anyway? Okay, I'll admit...with the school uniform on, it will be a nuisance if you were to be outside of school when it is still in session. Therefore, the control that it puts will be on those who plans to play truant. However, are you even supposed to be doing that when you are in school for a reason? If asked the question, "Why are you in school?" The answer would be, "To learn and study" of course! Then when playing truant is not supposed to happen when school is in session, can you honestly say that the control is unnecessary? Isn't it just one tiny, simple way of dealing with one of the many discipline problems that the schools/Education Ministry are worried about?

Okay, I know that this comment..."reduces differences among socioeconomic levels, and enhances students' self-confidence" does not ring 100% true. But it does make sense to a certain degree. The uniform policy was implemented, in hopes that the disparity among students can be lessened if not totally diminished. But it definitely exist, the disparity in SES (socioeconomic status) between students in schools. Even with the implementation of uniforms, there is undeniably still an obvious difference between students from the middle-income earning group compared to those from the high-income earners. Still, I do think its good that whatever little disparity that can be lessened, it'll go a long way in encouraging wholesome friendships and reducing cliquing. The part about self-confidence...I really do not know how can school uniforms encourage the building of it. I myself had my uniformed days in school, and I can't really say that it did encourage self-confidence. Perhaps if looked from another viewpoint - uniforms keep the other students from being overly fashionable and dripping with brand names from head-to-toe. Thus, keeping the other less fortunate students from looking mousy and sooooo unfashionable.....then, maybe there is a point there.

This opinionated post is available for further discussion. Please feel free to comment as you feel appropriate about this issue. ;) Looking forward to any comments. Thx a bunch!!

well..to be honest everything is relative depends on your point of view.At any given point of time you schools will always face with trouble students but i like to name them as "people with own thoughts" well for me i don't mind you're from upper class or lower class income family. But the most important thing goes to being yourself. While in school you don't know what holds in the future. But honestly, those of my school that was rich were never showing off or try to be nasty.Well about the uniforms. I don't think uniforms will bring people to be more organised both mentally nor physically. It's just a freaking mind set that those ancient people think of. come on..eventually we will still be wearing jeans to colleges. And everyyear you have to buy new uniforms. Won't that be a waste. And it's only be able to wear in school for that mere few hours..wasting of my time and money.. Thus i doubt school uniforms are fashionable. I always pick the cheapest cause it's what i call kolot, and every 1 or 2 years i change mine..You think the government can stop people from not wearing that?i don;t think so.. a simple trick of wearing a T-shirt to cover the kolot shirt we have is enuf to do the trick. don u see ppl are so happy when it comes to PJ?cause we can liveto stupid uniform behind and at least sport attire a better choice than that uniform.

well..if u r nasty u r nasty..tat goes with attitude too..imagine u r nasty..wearing a uniform also can get nasty with people. Yeah.. even uniforms have branded. so uniform is an unhealty way to bring us up. I am not from an army or police force. SO uniform is a no-no for me..y must i be obidient?am i a dog?i tot schools are suppose to prepare us for the outside world?so is uniform applied everywhere..come on face it.. they just want us to be nice and humble so we wont create any riots..haha..well..abit of the topic..i end it here lar

Uniforms dress codes improve school students' behaviour? Throughout my entire schooling life, I have never known that to be true... and I'm sure it is still untrue today.

Wearing school uniforms may reduce the differences between socio economic levels, but it seems less so nowadays. Just look at the hairstyles, schoolbags, shoes and even mobile phones students carry around. It becomes even more obvious which students are better off.

Clothes do not make a man, but if a man is made, clothes will enhance his appearance. A person who merely relies on external clothing for self-confidence believes in an illusion. Once that illusion is gone, their confidence is shattered. The ultimate source of self-confidence comes from God and his unconditional love, as well as the love from family and the closest of friends.

The truth about freedom and self-expression is that there must be boundaries. Having a dress code or uniforms actually gives a lot of freedom to a student. They are free to learn and carry out their activities without fear or concern about what they wear as everyone else also wear similar clothing. It is definitely one less burden to worry about among the challenges a student faces.

I believe the whole point of having dress codes and uniforms is to have order within a school. Having a set of rules and guidelines actually gives teachers and students the confidence to behave and act accordingly without fear. It helps to clearly distinguish between what is right or wrong. Rules and guidelines also provide a suitable method of discipline if required.

Do students even know what are their First Amendment rights? Do they even know such a thing exists let along understand what it means? Its ironic to assume that by not wearing uniforms students will maintain their individuality. In the first place, I seriously doubt students really want to stand out. Just look at the cliques they end up being part of. Cliques actually encourage (and sometimes demand) conformity. To be an individual means to stand on your own... and that really requires courage that most do not have.

How does wearing a uniform impose uncessary means of control? Is there some hidden technology implanted in school uniforms that embed into a student's brain functions and nervous system to control their behaviour and thoughts? Without control, chaos follows quickly. Control is necessary, not just to maintain order, but also to protect those who do follow the rules. No organisation or school can survive without necessary controls in place to protect itself and its people.

She then started yelling about me following her and its none ofmy business, etc. A tight lipped grunt escaped her set lips, and then a low wavering, open mouthed moan, as the woman squirmed in the flush of rising heat, her eyes closed shut, a dreamy expression on her face, savoring the pleasures of a masterful lovers hands.
